Curriculum vitae
Born on April 03, 1936 in Kalocsa. Secondary
school teacher of Hungarian and history (Degree from Lóránd Eötvös
University, Budapest, 1962.). D.Phil. (JATE, 1964), candidate of
linguistics (HAS 1976), doctor of linguistics (HAS 1993), dr. habil
(JATE 1995). Dr. honoris causa from University of Nitra, 2006.
Instructor at the Department of Hungarian Language of Juhász Gyula
Teacher Training College (from 2000, Juhász Gyula Teacher Training
Faculty of SZTE) from 1963 to 2006: college professor (1976),
university professor (1996), department head (1982–2000). College
Principal (1987–1990 and 1995–1998); Chair-in-turn for the Higher
Education Association for Szeged (1997—1998). Member of the
Linguistics Committee of SZTE, founding member of the Linguistics
Doctoral School of SZTE. Emeritus professor (2006–).
Member of the Linguistics Committee of HAS (1980–), the Hungarian
Scholarship Board (1992–1996), consulting member of Dept. I of HAS
(1999–2004), member of the Linguistics-Philosophy Committee of HAB
(2001–2006). Chair of the Szeged Group of the Hungarian Linguistics
Association (1977–2006). Member, Chair of the Scientific Advisory
Board of the Foundation for Szeged (1989–).
Two duties undertaken as a member of the Scientific Council of SZTE.
Representation of research and contact building interests of the
college staff in all areas, including promotions for college and
university professor titles. All promotions to date have been
accepted by the Scientific Council.
Profession-specific duty includes following up linguistic research
in Szeged University, several Hungarian and a number of foreign
universities. As a member of reviewer boards, participates in
doctoral qualification procedures of HAS, university professor, PhD
and habilitation procedures of HAB and the universities of Debrecen,
Pécs, and Veszprém, member of the editorial board of Magyar Nyelv
(1991–), editor of Szemiotikai szövegtan (1990–), and the Annales of
the University of Szeged (2000-).
His research (study of the structure of argumentative text) is
interdisciplinary, based on adjacent areas of linguistics, logic,
and rhetoric. Results published in 4 monographs, 30 book chapters
and around 160 referenced papers. A summary of his research will be
published in 2009 under the title Interpretation and applications of
Double Syllogism. As an appreciation of his activities in text
theory and building of inter-institutional relations for more than
40 years, the Univerzita Konštantína Filozofa v Nitre awarded him
the Doctor honoris causa title in 2006.
Major awards: For Hungarian Higher Education Medal-for-Merit (1982),
Déry Tibor Award (1996), Széchenyi Professor's Scholarship
(1999–2002), Pro Facultate (2004), Pro Urbe Szeged (2006), The
Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary
