University of Szeged Gyula Juhász Teachers’ Training College Music Department I. 1. Brief Introduction and History of the Department: Our department was founded in 1928. The first leader was Endre Szögi (Szeghy) composer, conductor, researcher in folk music, doctor of philosophy and professor. He was followed by Béla Avasi (composer, researcher, teacher of music theory, holder of candidate’s degree). After Lajos Monoki, who was a violin teacher and a conductor, Sándor Bárdi, singer and teacher of singing took over the department. In 1999 Noémi Maczelka, pianist, became the leader. Very important artists took part in the education work of our department, artists who gained much respect and fame in their special field, such as Oszkár Frank, researcher, composer and music-writer, Pál Kardos and Éva Rozgonyi choir masters, recipients of Liszt-prizes, Dr. György Mihálka conductor, recipient of Magister Emeritus-prize, Bogáta Berényi conductor, Imre Szendrei, István Nagy, Orsolya Szabó and Klára Frank pianists, Éva Gábor and Gabriella Veszely, singers. Several of the present teachers of the department have gained international recognition: Jancsovics Antal, conductor, Liszt-prize recipient, has performed in many concerts and has made many recordings in Hungary as well as abroad. He has specialized in the art of Andreas Rauch.
Ordasi Péter, the leader of the Kardos Pál Women’s Choir, has won prizes in international competitons and has delivered a course on the Kodály Method in Japan together with Vass Irén.
Dr. Dombi Józsefné dr. Kemény Erzsébet, holder of candidate’s degree, lecturer at international conferences, and author of several books, is specialized in assessing musical abilities. She also appears on stage as a pianist. Szabady Józsefné dr. Békési Magdolna is a singer and has written her candidate’s thesis in the history of the education of singing.
Bárdi Sándor, who appears in a lot of performances abroad, is the founder of the Szeged Kisopera (Short Opera Studio) and has presented some pieces for the first time in Hungary. So has Maczelka Noémi, who also appears on stage as a pianist both in Hungary and abroad. The scientific activity of Dr. Erõs Istvánné dr. Haincz Erzsébet is of national importance: she is a member of the Committee for Teachers’ Postgraduate Training, has worked out the basic exam in general knowledge and the curriculum of studies. Csanádi László, organist, participates frequently in interntional concerts and teaches organ and theory of music in our department. Kovács Gábor specializes in Baroque and Renaissance music. He is one of the few people in Hungary who deal with the research, history and teaching of Baroque dances. He delivers courses abroad and in Hungary and is a choreographer and choir leader as well. Varjasi Gyula choir master and singer, is the winner of international prizes with his choir.
The department has 14 full-time and 3 part-time teachers, one administrator who manages the library and about 120 students in the four years. Our musical library is unique in the town of Szeged. We have 12 pianos, 9 pianinos, 2 organs, 1 synthesiser, 1 clavicembalo, 6 violins, 3 violas, 3 cellos, 2 contrabass, 6 zithers, and one set of Baroque flutes. We have 2 video recorders, a hi-fi set, portable CD players, one photocopy machine and 3 computers at our disposal to assist us in teaching. Our students must choose one of the following faculties together with singing and music: Chorus leading English German Hungarian Library Mathematics The language of minorities (German, Romanian, Slovakian) Italian (from the academic year 2001/2002) French (from the academic year 2001/2002) Russian (from the academic year 2001/2002) Cultural-manager (from the academic year 2001/2002) The department has two choirs, the Women’s Choir is led by Ordasi Péter and the Mixed Choir by Kovács Gábor. Monoki Lajos leads a folk music group and one can learn to play the violin with him. The Scientific and Artistic Association of Students enter a competition every year and it usually becomes a national event. The short opera studio comprising students studying singing and choir leading (led by Bárdi Sándor), works within the framework of this students’ association. They deliver their performances as the final exam every year. 2.Programs and Course Offerings: The courses are: Solmization, Music Theory, Chorus Management, Reading Orchestral Scores, Methodology, Music History, Folk Music and Dance, Health of Voice, The Instruments of the Orchestra, Baroque and Renaissance Music and Dance, and Choir. Individual lessons can be: piano, organ, singing. 3.Additional Research Areas: In addition to their teaching responsibilities our staff hold concerts throughout Hungary and abroad and they are actively involved in theoretical research. We could then offer them these further areas of study: - Practical use of the Kodály Concept - Hungarian Folk Music - Contemporary Hungarian music concentrating on the choir and piano works of Hungarian composers - Choirworks of Kocsár and Orbán II. Born 1948, Budapest. Studied piano at the Bartók Béla Musical Secondary School in Budapest. His teacher in choir-conducting was Pál Kardos at the Teacher Training College in Szeged, and later István Párkai and Zoltán Vásárhelyi at the Academy of Music in Budapest. In 1975 started teaching at the Kodály Musical Secondary School in Kecskemét, and conducted child and youth mixed choirs. In 1981 and 1984 he was invited to Japan to teach solfege and choir-conducting at the Kodály-seminars in Sapporo, organized by the Japan Kodály Society. Since 1982 he has been an associate professor at the Teachers’ Traning College in Szeged. He teaches choir-conducting and theory of music. Since 1983 he has been the conductor of the 2nd Female Choir of the Teachers’ Training College, which group bears the name of Pál Kardos since April 1991. He became professor of choir-conducting in 1992, while retaining his earlier job at the Teacher Training College. Since 1 December 1992 he has been director of the Béla Bartók Musical High School at Békéscsaba. Since 1997 he has been associate professor of the Teacher Training College, and leads the Pál Kardos female choir. 4.Szabadyné Békési Magdolna dr.
