Task 6

Do you agree with these views about the characters of critical thinkers?

  • raise vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely;
  • gather and assess relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively;
  • come to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and  standards;
  • think open-mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing their assumptions, implications, and practical consequences; and
  • communicate effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems[1].

Here is one way of approaching the development of critical thinking

Master Thinker (Good habits of thought are becoming second nature)

Advanced Thinker (We advance in keeping with our practice)

Practicing Thinker (We recognize the need for regular practice)

Beginning Thinker (We try to improve but without regular practice)

Challenged Thinker (We are faced with significant problems in our thinking)

Unreflective Thinker (We are unaware of significant problems in our thinking)
