I. 4. Activities

Activities

1. Observe a traditionally structured school lesson and a PBL-type lesson. Make a list of the teacher’s instructions.

2. After lesson observations in groups of four compare your lists and compare the two teaching methods.

Sample instructions:

Teacher’s instructions
in a traditional classroom (with frontal work)
Teacher’s instructions
in a PBL-type classroom
Be quiet. Listen. Be interested in your work.
Listen to me and follow what I am doing.
Listen to the teacher.
First try to do the task on your own.
If you cannot do it, turn to your groupmates and ask for help.
Don’t break the rules. Don’t leave your place without permission. Try to find the solution yourself.
Raise your hand if you want to say something. Seek answers, investigate the problems.
Don’t disturb the others with your questions. Share your opinion with the others.
Don’t talk, unless you are allowed to. Observe your groupmates how they are working.
Don’t help your neighbour. Choose the task/exercise that interests you the most. Enjoy your work.
Don’t ask for help. If you have a problem, tell me (the teacher). Help those who are behind with their work.
Try to be the first to finish your work. Accept others’ help.
When you have finished work, sit straight and be quiet. Encourage others and help them if they are in need.
Correct your mistakes. Do everything you can for the success of group work.

3. Discuss which method is better for personality development. Give your reasons, too.
