Combined defence

Types:

5+1 (5 players defend zones, 1 player is in man-marking defence)

4+2 (4 players defend zones, 2 players are in man-marking defence)

1+5 (1 player follows the pivot in man-marking defence,  5 players defend zones)

2+4 (2 players follow the pivot in man-marking defence, 4 players defend zones)

The advantages of combined defence

  • the most dangerous player(s) can be taken out of play,
  • the man marking defender can be started easily

The disadvantages of combined defence

  • if the man marking defender makes a mistake, there is an extra man situation,
  • the other defenders have a bigger area

Playing against combined defence

  • changing places, closure, detachment, running in, playing the pivot
  • the player defended by man marking is placed backward, put in another position, substituted, or playing one against one
