Holding the ball

By holding the ball we mean the possession of the ball, holding it in the hand. Holding the ball can be with one hand or with two hands. It has a dual aim: defence from the opponent, as well as the formation of the position necessary for organising the offence.

The rules defining the holding of the ball:

  1. The ball may be held in the hand only for 3 seconds, even if it is on the ground
  2. Only 3 steps may be taken with the ball held in the hand
  3. The ball may be dribbled from one hand to the other

Instruction of holding the ball:

The safe performance of holding the ball can be enhanced by gymnastics exercises with the ball. These can be done while walking, running or in place. The correct technique can be formed and realised through the following exercises: taking the ball placed on the ground, then at various heights, with two hands, then with one hand; taking a moving (rolling) ball from the ground with two hands; combat pair exercises (the partner tries to take away the ball held in the hand, to play or drift it out).

Games enhancing the holding of the ball:

  • Running games with the ball in hand
  • Catching games with the ball in hand
  • Line and relay games
  • Individual competitions with the ball in hand
