The pace of the instruction of the basic technical elements depends on the prior skills of the students. If the children can learn fast and the members of the team have proper skills, the given basic elements, dribbles, passes, shots on goal (one-hand high-arc shot, layup shot, defensive basic moves) can be practised in a one-on-one play.

The preparative games are an indispensably important phase of the training of beginning basketball players, but it must also include the learning and acquisition of the basic technical elements.

The composition of the group determines the pace of the instruction of the basic technical elements.

There is no need to hurry; a careful and gradual instructional programme will be more successful.

In the instruction of lower primary school or beginning basketball players the prerequisites of the acquisition of the technical elements must be created and the foundations must be provided by mastering the exercises of former years.

It is a common mistake that teachers start to teach the technical elements when students do not have the necessary skills or prerequisites for the successful instruction (e.g. teaching passes from a stationery position, but the student can seldom catch even the rebounds from the wall).

The simplest element of basketball is one-on-one. The basic acquisition of the offensive and defensive tasks in the playing situation, as well as the position of the ball, is crucial.

In this age group the development of the movement of the children already makes it possible to start the instruction of the sport specific movement. The technical elements must be taught in a way that the modern sport technique can be based on it later.

In sport games, in addition to the basic technique, the simplest tactical elements can also be practised.

Main principles:

  • basic technical training, you must not hurry, the stable and good foundations are important, only slow progress,
  • presentation, presentation by an invited player, or video, DVD, CD, etc. (the instructor or teacher only if he can perform it perfectly),
  • satisfying the need to play (not only by basketball),
  • body control, coordination development by ball exercises,
  • careful skill development, the bones are not solid enough, the muscles are not developed (danger of starting to develop a bad posture)
