The footwork of the contact

To correctly learn setting (“basket contact”), positioning, the quick and dynamic movement toward the ball, is indispensable.  Before the contact one must align to the ball, which means that at the moment of contact the student must take the basic position where he can safely pass the ball. After that he enhances the pushing movement by bending and stretching the knees.

Exercises:

  • Setting (“basket contact”) with a ball played higher and higher.
  • Setting, then heading the ball, alternating.
  • Playing the ball up by setting, then, after it bounces on the ground, positioning below the ball, and playing it up again.
  • Squatting and touching the ground between settings.
  • Clapping in front of the body, overhead, or alternating, between settings.
  • Setting at the wall, constantly performing it.
  • Sending the ball to an appointed target by setting, or hitting on target with a korfball board.

It is important to deal with the arm and footwork separately in the course of instruction, but for their correct acquisition it is absolutely necessary to do them together. As on the court there is no resting situation, because everything involves changing places and positions, attention must be payed to practice in playing positions also when doing the exercises with the ball.   

Exercises in pairs:

  • One member of the pairs is in front, his partner is behind him; they move ahead setting (“basket contacts”), or one member of the pair moves backward.
  • The pairs are next to each other, at the first contact they play the ball overhead; then with a quarter turn they align to the ball and play it over to the partner by setting.
  • At the net the players continually send the ball over to each other within the attack lines.
  • At the net, starting from the attack line, the student moves back to the end line and then back, continually setting, then passes the ball to the partner.
  • Playing the ball over the net, the student squats, turns over, lies down into prone or supine position, jumps up or gets round objects until receiving the ball back from the partner.
  • At the net the student catches up with the ball sent by the partner to a shorter or longer distance, and then passes it by setting.

Exercises in groups:

  • In a figure of five, the ball is passed by setting (“basket contact”), so that the ball must always be sent over in front.
  • In queues facing each other, there are 3-3 students, and after sending the ball over by setting, the student stands at the end of his or the other queue.
  • In a tetragon figure, the two opposite students send the ball over to the partner by setting, then change places with the ones next to them.
