Emese Meszlényi-Lenhart

Aims

The aim of this teaching material is to enable teachers to acquaint their learners with the sense of orientation in water. Using orientation techniques physical education teachers will be able to offer varied activities for children, thus laying the foundation for their learners to learn to swim effortlessly. Having used to moving in water the children will be able to feel secure in the new environment and they will take a liking to water and their orientation in water will become natural. Concrete swimming movements can only be taught if children already move confidently in water. This is why before teaching to swim a significant group of exercises need to be practised with the learners, exercises, which are aimed at familiarizing them with water as a new substance. The teacher’s task in this respect is to acquaint children with the specific features of water and the basics of staying and moving around in it. When in water, the human body is exposed to a variety of conditions, very different from the ones which can be experienced when moving on the ground.
