Submersion

During submersion a child will learn to:

  • move safely
  • orientate
  • deliberately hold back and then exhale the air,
  • keep his/her eyes open.

Exercises to teach submersion are as follows:

  • Walking or running in water up to their knee or waist.  Children can do this exercise on their own, in pairs, or, instructors can organize a relay race.
  • From standing position going down to crouching (water at chin level).
  • Bouncing with arms on hips.
  • ’washing’ in water
  • „hairwashing” with water running down the face.
  • „It’s raining”. Each child throws water up and then stands below the drops.
  • Bending trunk, letting arms down and boxing in water.
  • ’Walking’ like seals in knee-high water.
  • Learners stand in circle, hold their hands, and after bouncing once or twice, submerge in water, then stand up.
  • The same as the former exercise, performed with open eyes.
  • Throw a pebble or a coin into the water and the children find it and get it.
  • In pairs one of the children stands in straddle position and the other one slips through his legs.
  • Who can walk the longest distance while crouching in water?
