5.2.4.Reading comprehension. Skeletal muscles.

This text was adapted from The World Book, 1992.

There are more than 600 muscles in the human body. There are three types of muscles: skeletal muscles, smooth muscles and cardiac muscles. Skeletal muscles give the body its shape and they hold the bones together. They also help the body to move. We also call skeletal muscles striated muscles. Long, cylindrical muscles make up skeletal muscles. The muscle fibres of skeletal muscles have light and dark stripes or brands. These are called striations. The core of the fibre is called nucleus.
